Climate Change and Lake-Effect Snowfall

in the Great Lakes Basin

Collaborators: Steve Vavrus, Azar Zarrin

Funding: NOAA CCDD

Publications: None at this time

Methods: The ICTP RegCM3 regional climate model is being run during the recent historical period

forced by NCEP Reanalysis and also for the mid- and late-21st century forced by IPCC AR4 global

climate model output.  The impact of climate change on the frequency of heavy lake effect snowstorms

is being studied.

Key finding: RegCM3 is capable of simulating reasonable lake-effect snowfall.

Midwest snowstorm during January 1996 as simulated by ICTP RegCM3 regional climate model.  Plot includes precipitation (shading), sea-level pressure (contours), and surface winds (vectors).
